The second trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming was once expected to arrive with fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters, but Sony opted to get a head start on the next phase of marketing for the film.
Homecoming‘s second theatrical trailer is now online (see above), building on the release of a teaser clip that features the movie’s primary antagonist, The Vulture/Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), as well as a glimpse at one of Spidey’s Spider-Tracers in the MCU.
Although Homecoming is first and foremost a movie about Peter Parker (Tom Holland) readjusting to life as a teenaged superhero after his role in the game-changing events of Captain America: Civil War, the film is also rooted firmly in the MCU mythology and includes Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), in what appears to be an essential supporting role.
For related reasons, the newly-released second Homecoming trailer only further plays up the idea of The Vulture and his cronies as being the antithesis to Tony and his fellow Avengers; or rather, Adrian is “the dark Tony Stark,” as producer Eric Hauserman Carroll has put it.
Speaking of – the second Homecoming trailer not only shifts the spotlight more onto The Vulture, but also his fellow technologically-enhanced baddies such as The Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), The Tinkerer (Michael Chernus) and the still mysterious villain whom Donald Glover is portraying in the film.
The first Homecoming trailer had already confirmed that Tony suits up as Iron Man alongside Peter as Spider-Man, but this second trailer (which Sony screened for those in attendance at its CinemaCon 2017 panel yesterday) further drives home why Peter needs Tony’s help dealing with “Team Vulture”.
